Echos of the
past
Follow the path of our forefathers
along the historic Staunton to Parkersburg Turnpike
(US 250). Little has changed since the road was completed
in the 1840s, linking the Shenandoah Valley with the
Virginia frontier and the Ohio River Valley.
Union soldiers followed the Turnpike
eastward, marching on the village of McDowell in May
1862. Stonewall Jackson routed Federal troops during
the Battle of McDowell, marking the first victory of
his hard-fought Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Come trace
the movements of the soldiers who fought and died on
nearby Sitlington's Hill.
Capitol Holiday Tree from Highland
Co.
A beautiful
65-foot red spruce from Highland County graced the lawn
lawn of the U.S. Capitol in 2004. Highland County is proud
to be the source of the Capitol Holiday Read
