3. Upper Bullpasture Valley Trail
From Monterey, follow US 250 east to McDowell.
Turn left/north on Rt. 54 into the Bullpasture Valley to Rt. 619.
Turn right on Rt. 619 and follow gravel road (4 mi.) to Rt. 614.
Turn right and follow Rt. 614 to US 250. Turn right/west on US 250
and return to McDowell and/or Monterey. McDowell > Bullpasture
and Cowpasture Valleys > McDowell = 29.80 miles
4. Big Valley
From Monterey, follow US 220 south to Mustoe.
Turn left on Rt. 607 through Big Valley to Bolar, where Rt. 607
rejoins US 220. Turn right to follow US 220 back to Monterey. Monterey
> Mustoe > Big Valley > Bolar > Monterey = 33.31 miles
5. Back Creek
From Monterey, follow US 250 west through Hightown
to Rt. 600. Turn left/south on Rt. 600 (gravel road 5 mi.) and follow
to Rt. 84. Turn left on Rt. 84 and follow to US 220. Turn left on
US 220 and return to Monterey. Monterey > Hightown > Back
Creek > Mill Gap > Vanderpool > Monterey = 31.85 miles
6. Laurel Fork
This is a remote wooded area requiring a lengthy
scenic drive of 21 miles of well-graded, gravel road (12.7 mi.).

directions.
7. Highland Wildlife Management Area
(Jack Mountain)
The well-graded gravel road (9.8 mi.) into
this area is best suited to foot traffic and/or 4-wheel drive. The
road is closed to vehicular traffic during parts of the year. Contact
