Farm Stays

Highland County is Virginia’s most rural county and farms, particularly cattle and sheep farms, dominate the landscape. A number of these farms provide visitors with the opportunity to experience the environment of a working farm. Whether your desire is to wander at will while observing farm life or to get some hands-on experience at a particular farm activity, these listed farms can accommodate your wishes.

 

::: Allegheny Mountain Institute

Enjoy fresh-from-the-farm meals and refreshing spring water in a cozy lodge atop Allegheny Mountain in beautiful Highland County, Virginia. Relax by sitting on the porch and gazing at the stars. Then, tour the farm and meet, learn, and work alongside young adults passionate about growing healthy communities through food. 

Allegheny Mountain Institute’s Mountain Farm is a working farm and fellowship program. Seven Allegheny Mountain Institute (AMI) Fellows live, work, and participate in immersive training on this farm for the first six months of their Fellowship.

AMI’s farm includes a spacious lodge and Fellow cabins, lush gardens, and botanically-rich fields and forests. Chickens, cows, and bees are on the Farm below the lodge. Guests are invited to stay in the upstairs of the lodge, which includes four guests bedroom and two private bathrooms (available to rent in a variety of configurations).

A self-serve continental breakfast featuring sustainably grown, farm-fresh produce are provided for all guests. Weekday guests are also invited to participate in family style meals with the Fellows at no additional charge. 

Guests may participate in select workshops with the Fellows for a small fee on Wednesdays. Workshop listings and sign-ups are available on the AMI website. Farm stay guests intending to participate in a weekday workshop should plan to stay Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

::: Berriedale Farms
Berriedale Farms is located in the Cowpasture River Valley of Virginia and among the the Appalachian Mountains. Our small family farm, in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, is committed to the progressive conservation of land, water and heritage livestock. Berriedale Farms raises Red Poll cattle – recognized by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy as a threatened heritage breed. We work the farm and in the winter, feed the cows hay with a rare breed of Suffolk draft horse. Our farm endeavors to raise the healthiest and the most flavorful grass-fed and grass-finished beef east of the Mississippi River. Escape from the bright lights and the maddening crowds to a Cabin on the Cowpasture River!!!

::: Blue Grass Chestnut Cottage

The Blue Grass Chestnut Cottage in Highland County, Virginia, offers one bedroom (queen bed), a living room, a fully-equipped kitchen, and a full bath with laundry facilities.  The living room has a gas log fireplace and a fold-out twin bed. The cottage has an open floor plan, no steps, and easy access from the driveway.  Linens and towels are provided. Wifi is available. There is no network television but a TV with a DVD player is provided along with a library of movies.  The TV is Chromecast ready and guests with an Amazon Prime account can also access Amazon Fire TV.  A radio/CD player and a small collection of CDs is available.

Enjoy the beauty of the mountains in this charming restored farmhouse situated on a 250 acre working farm near Monterey. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the scenic views of the mountains and valleys. Lend a hand with farm chores such as gathering eggs and feeding lambs. Hike through the mountain pastures or enjoy the stars while you gather around a campfire. The Farm House offers 5 bedrooms, a complete eat-in kitchen, dining room, comfortable living room and sun porch.

Riven Rock Farm is located in beautiful Highland County, Virginia.  We strive to offer a place where the wild meets agriculture, a place where healthy ecosystems and biodiversity are priorities over monocultures and dollars.

This 62 acre addition to our farm, has 6 ponds and over 1/2 mile of trout stream for fishing.  Walking paths around the property provide you with an opportunity to visit the beaver lodge, and stroll through hay meadows and wildflower fields.  The groves of sugar maples and spruce trees make homes for a variety of birds.
