McDowell Battlefield Days

Once again, Confederate & Union soldiers return to the village of McDowell for a full day of living Civil War history.

This event is open to the general public. Reenactors portray military,  civilian, and medical aspects of the Civil War as it affected the tiny village of McDowell, Virginia in 1862. Event includes a reenactment of the Battle of McDowell, the first Confederate victory of Stonewall Jackson’s Valley Campaign; horse drawn wagon tours, guest speakers, music, and period crafts. Event does not take place annually.

 

Schedule of Events:

9 :00 am Event open to spectators / camps open for tours
9:00 am Guest Speaker: Richard Armstrong on “The Battle of McDowell” (McDowell Presbyterian Church)
9:00 am – 1:00 pm Military Camp Life & Military History scenarios throughout the town of McDowell 
10:00 am Guest Speaker: Lori Botkin, on “1860’s Women’s Clothing” (McDowell Presbyterian Church)
11:00 am Guest Speaker: Gregg Clemmer on “Old Allegheny: The Life & Wars of General Ed Johnson” (McDowell Presbyterian Church)
12:00 pm Guest Speaker: Rev. Beth Pyles on the “History of the McDowell Presbyterian Church” (McDowell Presbyterian Church)
1:00 pm Troops begin to mobilize for battle
1:30 pm Gate opens to battle viewing area
2:00 pm – 3:00 pm Battle Reenactment
3:00 pm – 5:00 pm Military Camp Life & Living History scenarios throughout the town of McDowell
3:30 pm Guest Speaker: Lorraine White on “Highland’s African Americans through the Civil War” (McDowell Presbyterian Church)
4:00 pm Federal Dress Parade
5:00 pm Public event closes

Throughout the Day:

  • Medical, military & civilian life demonstrations at Highland County Museum
  • Craft demonstrations & sales on McDowell Presbyterian Church grounds
  • Food available at the McDowell Firehouse, McDowell Presbyterian Church, and local stores

 

Admission Fee: $3 (12 years & under free)
Admission fee gains spectators access to the viewing area for Battle Reenactment. Tickets available at the information table and at the viewing area gate.
