The Highland County community
is immensely proud of its medical facilities.
Our Highland County Medical Center is a nonprofit
entity that was founded and initially supported
by the hard work and generosity of the community.
For example, at its inception we received a
donation of the land and the building was constructed
almost completely by local contractors, who
provided time and materials without charge.
The Center now garners support from many sources
including patient revenues, generous donations
from the community, government agencies, and
private foundations. In 2003, the Center became
a Federally Qualified Health Center under the
Community Health Center program of the Health
Resources and Services Administration, Department
of Health and Human Services. The Medical Center
is here is to provide high quality medical care
to all members of our community regardless of
their ability to pay. A sliding scale discount
program of payment is available to patients
who qualify based on need.
The
Center is governed by a board of directors and
operations are overseen by an executive director.
The Center has three medical providers and a dentist.
The medical director is a family practitioner
and a part-time internist is also present two
days a week. These doctors are supported by a
physician's assistant, nursing and administrative
support staff. Our hours are designed to accommodate
the entire community and appointments may be made
by calling (540) 468-3300. After hours, callers
to this number will receive a recorded message
directing the caller to an appropriate number
for medical problems. One of our medical providers
is always on call after regular office hours.
We offer a family practice skilled in treating
most medical conditions; pediatric well-care addressing
newborns to adolescence; dentistry; x-ray
services, and some eye care services. In addition,
our internist is dedicated to women's health programs.
Mental health and substance abuse programs are
provided one day a week in collaboration with
the Valley Community Services Board. We participate
in Medicare and Medicaid and either participate
or will assist in billing third party payers as
allowable.
Although not a formal or extensive
pharmacy, the Center keeps a stock of many of
the most commonly used prescription drugs for
the convenience of our patients. In cases in which
a drug has a very short shelf life or is
prescribed less frequently, we have an arrangement
with the Hot Springs Pharmacy for daily delivery
as necessary. We participate in several pharmacy
assistance programs to enhance affordable pharmaceutical
access. Truly a community center, we collaborate
with a number of local support groups to provide
comprehensive medical coverage. The county supported
health department provides inoculations and health-related
consultations. The Bath Community Hospital, less
than 45 minutes from Monterey, handles emergency
situations that the Highland Medical Center is
unable to address. Our family physician cooperates
with the hospital to schedule diagnostic tests
that require specific facilities, such as stress
tests. In addition, the Medical Center building
incorporates a physical therapy facility staffed
by therapists from Bath Community Hospital. We
also work closely with the hospital's Hospice
of the Highlands that provides comfort and compassion
to terminally ill patients. In medical emergencies,
the community is very
fortunate to have an efficient Rescue Squad with
members trained in life support to transport patients
to an emergency room at Bath Community Hospital
or the Augusta Medical Center at Fishersville.
In addition, air evacuation via helicopter can
be arranged in critical situations to transport
patients to the University of Virginia Medical
Center in
Charlottesville, VA. As the primary point-of-entry
into the regional healthcare network, Highland
Medical Center's staff is highly skilled in rapid
assessment and management of patients to help
them quickly reach the best route of quality care.
